In India, yield on 10-year government securities — the risk-free rate of return on the most liquid of gilts — is taken as the benchmark for the rate of interest in the economy. Banks and other lenders usually consider this rate to be the most important rate to which they can map their lending rates. So any substantial increase in the 10-year yield over a few weeks usually leads to lenders increasing their rates of interest that affects most borrowers. The opposite is also true: Any drop in benchmark rate for a substantial period of time leads to drop in rate of interest by the lenders.
