An ETF is a security that tracks the price of an underlying asset or assets which could be stocks, commodities or an index. These are like mutual fund units but are listed on the bourses and are continuously bought and sold at market-determined prices. Since they are listed on the bourses and traded on a continuous basis, unlike other mutual fund schemes, no net asset value is calculated for ETF units. Some of the most popular ETFs in India are gold ETFs, while globally there are several other types of ETFs that attract substantial investor money. One of the biggest advantages of ETF investment is the low cost of owning an underlying asset when compared to investing in a mutual fund unit. Another advantage of ETF investing is that, while in mutual funds one can get the price at the close of the day, in ETFs the price one gets is on a real time basis. ETFs also allow diversification of portfolio at a low cost.
